Since leaving Syracuse,
"G-Mac" has played in Greece for Panionios BC and Olympiacos BC and also
in the NBDL with the Bakersfield Jam. He currently plays for BK Ventspils,
a Latvian team that participates in the ULEB Cup and plays in the Baltic
League and the Latvian League
Gerry was a guard for the
Syracuse Orange, Syracuse University men's basketball team, from 2002 to
2006. McNamara is known for his shooting - especially for his three-point
shooting - and his tenacity. McNamara started all 135 games he played in
his four years with the Orange and graduated with a degree in Speech
Communications in May 2006.
College - McNamara helped
capture the school's first ever National Championship in 2003. As a
freshman, McNamara played a key role in the title by hitting six three
pointers in the first half and helping Syracuse open up an 18-point lead.
Gerry was named to the All-Tournament team.
College legacy - A 2006 Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American,
McNamara was named by Big East head coaches to the league's All-Freshman
team in 2003, to the All Big East second team in 2004 and to the All Big
East first team in 2005 and 2006. Dave Gavitt Award as the 2006 Big East's
tournament Most Outstanding Player
His career statistics rank
among the greats in Syracuse's school history. He finished fourth in
points scored (2099), first in minutes played (4781), second in steals
(258), third in assists (648), first in three-point shots made (400) and
attempted (1131), and first in career free-throw percentage (89.1%).
Gerry set conference
records for three-pointers made (183) and career free-throw percentage
(91.7%). His 400 career three-pointers rank sixth all-time in NCAA
history.
McNamara was also named the 2006 winner of the Chip Hilton Player of the
Year Award. The award is presented annually by the Naismith Memorial
Basketball Hall of Fame to a senior Division I men's player who
demonstrates outstanding character, leadership and talent .
High School: At
Bishop Hannan McNamara finished his scholastic career ranked seventh in
career scoring in Pennsylvania (2,917 points)…He is the District II
all-time leader…The Lancers posted records of 28-3, 27-4, 24-7 and 30-3
during his four campaigns…McNamara was the 2002 Pennsylvania Gatorade
Player of the Year. 2002 Parade Fourth-Team All-American recognition…He
was the AP Pennsylvania Player of the Year following his junior season a
three-time Associated Press (AP) Small School First-Team All-State pick.
Bishop Hannan won the District II Class A Championship and the Class A
Eastern crown in 1999-00…The Lancers finished as the state runner-up in
1998-99 and 1999-00…McNamara averaged 21.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, 8.2
assists and 4.7 steals per game in his sophomore season…He reached the
1,000 career point mark quicker than any player in Bishop Hannan
history…McNamara averaged 23.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, 8.5 assists and 3.9
assists as a junior…He led Bishop Hannan to the 2002 PIAA Class AA
Championship…He tallied 55 points in the semifinal triumph and 32 points
in the final,McNamara averaged 23.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, 7.2 assists and
3.8 steals per game in 2001-02…He was a team captain for Coach John Bucci
as a junior and a senior.
