MANHEIM – JB Hoops Murray posted a convincing victory and suffered a tough defeat during the opening day of the Blue Chip Pre-Season Challenge, powered by Under Armour.
Playing a pair of games Friday night at Spooky Nook Sports, JB Hoops handled Mid Atlantic Legacy Cullison, 50-22, before falling to Hoop Nation Williams, 37-33.
The eighth-grade team has games at 4 and 6:20 Saturday before finishing up at 11:20 Sunday morning.
Cecelia Collins had 12 points in the opening win while Maggie Mills added 11, including hitting three 3-pointers.
Stephanie Yatko scored all eight of her points in the second half.
Emily Crawn was the high scorer against Hoop Nation with eight points. Collins and Alexa Tihansky added seven each.
JB Hoops rallied from behind in the second half of its first game, but saw a halftime lead get away in the second.
Mid Atlantic Legacy hit the first basket of the half for a 16-13 lead in the opener.
Mills had a pair of 3-pointers during the 13-0 JB Hoops run that followed.
JB Hoops kept going. Tihansky scored from close range three times – twice off teammate’s steals and once on an offensive rebound – to build the advantage to 34-18 with 6:23 left.
After JB Hoops took a 19-16 halftime lead, Hoop Nation opened a 29-22 lead midway through the second half and held on the rest of the way.
Anna Talutto’s drive cut the deficit to three for the last time at 34-31 with 3:01 remaining.
