JB Hoops alum Joey Grula, a senior at Hazleton Area, closed out his high school athletic career Saturday by earning a state medal at the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Track and Field Championships.
Grula finished eighth out of 26 Class 3A boys javelin competitors at Shippensburg University with a throw of 179-4.
The top eight in each event earn state medals and score points for their teams.
Grula, who will continue his academic and track and field careers in the Ivy League at Brown University, had just missed a medal Friday. He finished ninth out of 28 in the triple jump 45-2 ¼, missing the medal by one place and 4 ½ inches.
Lexi Walsh, another JB Hoops alum who will compete in track and field on the college level, completed her high school career Friday.
The Holy Cross senior and Temple University recruit placed 14th in the Class 2A girls 1600-meter run in 5:22.21. She needed to get into the top 12 to make Saturday’s final.
Both Grula and Walsh were also all-stars on the basketball court for their high school teams. Grula helped the Cougars to a state Class 6A boys semifinal appearance.
