ALUMNI REPORT: Maxwells recognized by conference

Evan Maxwell wrapped up his college career while younger brother Seth Maxwell was getting his started at Indiana Wesleyan University, which reached the National Intercollegiate Athletic Association Division II men’s basketball quarterfinals before being eliminated.

The two JB Hoops alums from Abington Heights earned Crossroads League honors in a season that ended three wins short of a national championship repeat.

Evan, a 6-foot-10 senior forward, was selected as a first-team conference all-star, a year after earning second-team honors. Seth, a 7-foot freshman center, was named to the conference’s all-rookie team.

Indiana Wesleyan (28-5) defeated Washington Adventist (Md.), 87-81, and Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.), 87-86, before falling to Oregon Tech, 107-93, March 9 in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Evan had 23 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the floor and 8-for-9 from the line in the national tournament opener. He added 16 and 12 points in the other two games.

Seth added nine points in 18 minutes against Washington Adventist. He had five blocked shots over the next two games.

Evan ranked fourth in NAIA Division II in field goal percentage at 60.7 while averaging 16.6 points and 6.4 rebounds and playing a major role in a conference championship for the second straight season.

“Evan has had a dominating year and has proven to be one of the best bigs in the country,” IWU head coach Greg Tonagel said in a story on the school website. “His spiritual leadership in the locker room this year has been instrumental for our team.”

Seth averaged 5.9 points and 3.6 rebounds in 14 minutes per game while leading the lead with 43 blocks.

“Seth has a bright future ahead,” Tonagel said. “He’s only scratched the surface. With Evan leaving, next year his opportunities will increase.”
