Delfino Earned Individual Recognition In Team’s State Final Run

Delfino earned individual recognition in team’s state final run

Whether trying to keep Gianna Delfino from getting to the basket or
attempting to win a chase for a rebound or loose ball, state playoff
opponents found that the senior has uncommon quickness for a forward.
“Gianna is as quick as just about anybody,” Dunmore coach Ben O’Brien said.
“Point guards will have a hard time staying in front of Gianna.
“That’s how quick she is.”
That quickness came out in many different ways on the court – and on the
statsheet.
It showed when Dunmore was beating the teams that had knocked it out of the
last two state tournaments on the way to an appearance in the Pennsylvania
Interscholastic Athletic Association Class 3A girls championship game in
Hershey.
Delfino was the final PNC Bank District 2 Girls Basketball Player of the
Week for her role in those two victories in the week ending March 16.
She was Dunmore’s co-scoring leader in one state tournament win and the
rebounding leader while posting a double-double in another as the Lady Bucks
knocked off their two highest-ranked obstacles on the way to Hershey.
Deflino was 4-for-4 with 14 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals in a 47-37,
second-round victory over Saint Basil Academy in the only meeting of
unbeaten teams in any classification in this season’s state tournament.
“We knew they were ranked number-one and we knew going in that it was going
to be a tough game,” said Delfino, who shared the team scoring lead against
Saint Basil. “Throughout the year, we haven’t had much adversity, so being
in games like this, it brought something new to the table that we had to
work through.”
Against four-time defending state champion Neumann-Goretti Friday night,
Delfino scored 13 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the 54-47 quarterfinal
victory.
On the season, Delfino averaged more than eight points per game. She also
produces averaged of eight rebounds, four assists, three steals and a
blocked shot to help the Lady Bucks to their 29-1 season.
“Coach O’Brien in the summer sent out a text to the team saying ‘the road to
Hershey starts now’,” said Delfino, who also played in the spring and summer
with the JB Hoops AAU team. “That was in the summer before our team was even
brought together.”
Delfino was the third JB Hoops player on the Dunmore team to earn the Player
of the Week award. She joined fellow program alum Victoria Toomey, another
senior, and freshman Moriah Murray. They joined another JB Hoops alum, Lisa
Tallo, in the starting lineup and in receiving all-star recognition.
During the successful season, Delfino also set up her future. She committed
to study and play National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III
basketball at Misericordia University, which is coming off a school record
for wins in a season while going 23-6 and advancing to the ECAC Tournament.
When it was over, Delfino was named first-team Lackawanna League Division 3
all-star and second-team all-District 2 by NEPABasketball.com.
