Mixed results in bracket play

By Tom Robinson

OXON HILL, Md. – Tuesday’s early morning bracket play at USJN 17U Girls Nationals produced mixed results for JB Hoops teams – an impressive win and a second straight agonizing loss.

JB Hoops Bucci handled United NJ 17 Navy, 46-31, in the Platinum Consolation bracket semifinal. After finishing second in Pool G, the team is 5-1 for the tournament with one game remaining to decide the bracket winner at noon Tuesday.

Team Pennsylvania 16 Garcia edged JB Hoops Rose, 44-41, in overtime in the Crystal Championship bracket semifinal. Although it won Pool ZZ and did not lose a game in regulation, the team is done for the tournament at 4-2 with consecutive overtime losses.

Although only one in three teams out of the event’s 448 entrants gets to participate in bracket play, the Scranton-based JB Hoops program went 2-for-2 in advancing from pool to bracket competition. With one game remaining, the JB Hoops teams are a combined 9-3 with the three losses coming by a total of nine points and the two of them coming in overtime.

MORE TO COME: Details from both games and additional reporting from other action in the tournament is still on the way from Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center.
