The college career of Bobby Planutis gets a fresh start tonight when St. Bonaventure University hosts Ohio University in a 7:30 p.m. men’s basketball game.
The JB Hoops and Hazleton Area alum is a redshirt sophomore. He played one season at Mount St. Mary’s in Maryland before sitting out a season, as required when he transferred to St. Bonaventure.
Planutis, a 6-foot-8 forward, played in 32 games, making 25 starts at Mount St. Mary’s. He made 49 percent of his 3-pointers (33-for-67) and 90 percent of his free throws (36-for-40) while averaging 5.6 points and 3.9 rebounds.
Between Hazleton Area and Mount St. Mary’s, Planutis spent a year at Bridgton Academy in Maine.
Planutis was in the starting lineup last week when St. Bonaventure routed Division III Alfred University, 90-45, in an exhibition game. He was the team’s second-leading scorer with 11 points in 18 minutes.
Planutis shot 5-for-7 and also had four rebounds and two steals.
The Bonnies went 12-6 in the Atlantic 10 and 18-16 overall last season. They missed out on an NCAA Tournament berth when they fell to Saint Louis, 55-53, in the conference championship game.
