Bobby Planutis scored all 14 of his points in the final 15 minutes Monday night to lead St. Bonaventure University to a come-from-behind, 71-64 victory over host Florida Atlantic University in the championship game of the Boca Beach Classic Hall of Fame Bracket.
Planutis came off the bench to finish with 14 points and 7 rebounds in 24 minutes.
The JB Hoops alum from Hazleton Area is a redshirt sophomore after transferring from Mount St. Mary’s. He led the Bonnies in offensive rebounds with three, shared the team lead in total rebounds and was one point off the team scoring lead in the victory.
St. Bonaventure (4-4) overcame a 10-point deficit in the final 13½ minutes, beginning with a putback by Planutis.
The 6-foot-8 sophomore scored his first points on a 3-pointer with 14:56 left to make it 42-37. Florida Atlantic then scored the next five points before Planutis’ putback.
Planutis scored five straight points midway through the second half with a 3-pointer followed by an inside basket to make it 49-46.
St. Bonaventure went in front with 13 straight points for a 59-54 lead. Another rebound and basket by Planutis, who was unable to convert it into a three-point play, was part of the streak.
Planutis hit one of two free throws for a 62-56 lead with 3:39 left and then again to close the scoring with seven seconds left.
Planutis finished 5-for-7 from the floor, 2-for-3 on 3-pointers and 2-for-5 from the line.
In three games in the Boca Beach Classic, Planutis, who had started the season’s first three games, played 80 minutes off the bench.
Planutis hit his first 3-pointer of the season and finished with five points and six rebounds during a 56-51 win over Mercer. H followed that up with four points, six rebounds, two assists and a steal in Sunday’s 70-61 win over San Diego.
Through eight games, he is averaging 4.9 points, 6.2 rebounds and 0.9 assists.
