UPDATED: Steele strong in Susquehanna opener

JB Hoops alum Mackenzie Steele made sure defending Lackawanna League Division 4 and District 2-11 Class A Subregional champion Susquehanna got its season off to a positive start.

Steele had 23 points, 15 rebounds and 8 blocked shots Tuesday night when the Lady Sabers went on the road and came away with a 57-45 victory over Northeast Bradford.

The 6-foot-2 center is playing this season with the initials J.B. on her sneaker, visible to her any time she looks down during a game, in honor of her AAU coach, John Bucci, who died last month. She began her senior season by scoring 16 of Susquehanna’s 24 points in the middle two quarters to help the Lady Sabers maintain their lead.

Susquehanna has a strong JB Hoops connection.

All-state guard/forward Taylor Huyck is another JB Hoops alum. She hit three 3-pointers in the first quarter to get the Lady Sabers out to a 19-7 lead.

Huyck finished with 14 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals.

The Lady Sabers are coached by another JB Hoops alum, Kirk Fallon. Assistant coach Dawn Steele is also a JB Hoops assistant coach.
