NEPA Elite girls go 6-0 in high school division

SCRANTON – Moriah Murray hit her last five 3-point attempts while scoring 20 points to lead five double figures scorers when the NEPA Elite Clark 17U girls team rolled to a 78-33 victory over the Elmira Fusion 17U girls in the Summer Showdown at Riverfront Sports.

The Clark team finished 2-0 in the High School Girls Division of the event to run its winning streak to nine games and improve to 11-1 on the season.

NEPA Elite ran off 30 straight points in the second half and led by as many as 52 before Elmira scored the game’s final six points.

Skylar Bianchi finished with 14 points, Ciera Toomey had 11 while Olivia Ciullo and Clair Marion added 10 each.

NEPA Elite shot 66.7 percent (16-for-24) during the second half and finished over 50 percent for the game in both of its wins.

The offense combined crisp passes for easy layups with 3-pointers during the streak in which it needed less than 9 minutes to produce the 30 points.

Murray scored 14 points in 5:37 during the second half, making four straight 3-point attempts in a span of 3:11.

NEPA Elite trailed for the only time all night on the game’s opening basket, but responded with the next 12 points, including 5 by Toomey and a go-ahead 3-pointer by Murray.

The last four points of the first half, then consecutive 3-pointers by Maria Belardi and Murray to open the second half pushed the lead to 43-20.

Murray had eight points while Ciullo and Bianchi added six each in the streak, which created a 76-24 lead with 3:30 left.

NEPA Elite went 13-for-13 from the line, including nine attempts in the first half.

There were many other impressive statistical performances.

Toomey led the team in rebounds (seven) and blocked shots (three) while dishing out five assists and scoring in double figures.

Rachael Rose added six points while leading the team with six assists.

Kaeli Romanowski made five steals and dished out four assists.

The team had assists on 24 of its 28 baskets with 7 of the 8 players contributing at least 2.

Marion was the second-leading rebounder with six. Ciullo grabbed five, including three on the offensive end.

Murray and Toomey play their high school basketball at Dunmore. Rose and Belardi are Scranton Prep teammates. Bianchi is from Valley View, Marion from Abington Heights, Ciullo from Old Forge and Romanowski from Western Wayne.

SCRANTON – Clair Marion scored a game-high 16 points while Ciera Toomey and Kaeli Romanowski joined her in double figures by shooting a combined 11-for-12 from the floor when the NEPA Elite 17U girls team opened the Summer Showdown at Riverfront Sports with a 71-46 victory.

NEPA Elite made more than half its shots from the floor, including shooting 67.9 percent (19-for-28) in the first half.

Toomey made all seven of her shots from the floor while adding 14 points. She was 6-for-6 in the first half and her only basket of the second half, off a Rachael Rose pass in transition, created the game’s biggest lead at 61-28 with 10:49 left.

Romanowski came off the bench to add 11 points by going 4-for-5 from the floor, 1-for-2 on 3-pointers and 2-2 from the line.

All eight NEPA Elite players in uniform scored at least four points.

Rose finished with nine points and four assists.

Maria Belardi led the team with eight rebounds and shared the assist lead with Rose.

Toomey added seven rebounds.

Marion, Romanowski and Moriah Murray all had two steals.

SCRANTON – The entire starting five had a hand in getting the NEPA Elite Clark 17U girls team off to a 19-2 start in its first game of the night.

A streak of 14 straight points created the 17-point lead just 4:25 into what became a 71-46 romp over the Syracuse Royals 17U in an opening game of the High School Division of the Summer Showdown at Riverfront Sports.

Ciera Toomey went 3-for-3 while scoring six points and grabbing three rebounds in the fast start.

NEPA Elite went 8-for-10, including 3-for-4 from 3-point range while taking the 19-2 lead.

Clair Marion scored four points and dished out three assists during that time. Moriah Murray, Maria Belardi and Rachael Rose all hit three 3-pointers.

Toomey and Murray are also teammates at Dunmore while Belardi and Rose play for Scranton Prep and Marion is from Abington Heights.

SCRANTON – The NEPA Elite 17U girls teams have completed a perfect night, winning all six of their games in the High School Division of the Summer Showdown at Riverfront Sports.

The new NEPA Elite Genco 17U team defeated the Syracuse Royals 15U girls, 71-28.

The Genco team joined the NEPA Elite Clark 17U girls in going 2-0 on the night.

The NEPA Elite Carra/Lewis 17U team and the NEPA Elite 16U team each won their only game.

The Clark team is done for the weekend, but the other three teams play Saturday in other divisions. The NEPA Elite 16U girls continue on into Sunday.

SCRANTON – The NEPA Elite 17U girls teams swept the three 6:40 p.m. games to improve to 5-0 combined in the High School Girls Division of the Summer Showdown at Riverfront Sports.

The Carra/Lewis team defeated the Syracuse Royals 16U girls, 59-53.

Lauren Casey played well down the stretch and made it a two-possession game by scoring inside with 1:15 left.

Carra/Lewis protected the ball with the lead until Jenna Beach hit both ends of a one-and-one with 12 seconds remaining.

The other two teams won comfortably.

The Clark team extended its winning streak to nine games with a 78-33 romp over the Elmira Fusion 17U girls.

The Genco team, added by the AAU club earlier this week before the event on its home floor, rolled over the Elmira Fusion 16U team, 72-36.

SCRANTON – Katherine Shepherd and Julia Glowacki each made a pair of 3-pointers in the final 2:27 to help the NEPA Elite 16U girls team defeat the Syracuse Royals 15U team, 52-37, in the Summer Showdown at Riverfront Sports.

Syracuse was within 40-34 before Shepherd connected with 2:27 left.

Glowacki scored from the left wing to make it 46-36 with 1:34 to play and Shepherd hit again from the left corner with a minute remaining to stretch the lead to 13.

The final points of the game came from Glowacki in the right corner, completing a game-ending, 12-3 run in which NEPA Elite was 4-for-4 on 3-pointers.

Shepherd plays at Western Wayne High School. Glowacki is from Crestwood.

SCRANTON – The Summer Showdown at Riverfront Sports is underway and already the first two NEPA Elite teams in action have posted victories.

The three-day event begins with just the High School Girls Division in action. Other age groups join in beginning Saturday morning.

Teams from the host NEPA Elite club were in action on two of the three courts in the first set of games.

The NEPA Elite Clark 17U girls scored 19 of the game’s first 21 points on the way to a 71-46 victory over the Syracuse Royals 17U team.

The NEPA Elite 16U girls went 4-for-4 on 3-pointers in the final 2:27 to break open a six-point game and defeat the Syracuse Royals 15U team, 52-37.

All three NEPA Elite 17U girls teams are on the court now, starting up 6:40 games.
