NEPA Elite Basalyga 17U boys point guard Justin Smith gave his commitment today to continue his academic and athletic careers at Montclair State University.
The senior from Pocono Mountain West made a visit Thursday to the New Jersey school, which began recruiting him this summer.
“Walking around on the campus, it was really big and diverse,” said Smith, who had earlier visited DeSales University. “They have a really good basketball team and, in what I wanted to major in, they have a really good business and sports management program.”
Smith came to the first-year AAU club out of Riverfront Sports in Scranton after a suggestion from high school teammate Christian Fermin, who plays on the NEPA Elite Coyle 17U team.
“Because I knew this was my last year that I could play AAU, I knew that I had to,” Smith said. “It gets you exposure and it really helped me a lot.”
At Pocono Mountain West, Smith made the varsity as a sophomore.
Smith started at point guard as a junior. He led the 2019-20 team in scoring and assists, including a 36-point game against Stroudsburg in which he tied the school single-game scoring record.
Montclair State is coming off a 9-9 season in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. It finished 11-14 overall.
