On the day before they are scheduled to start the 2020-21 season, the Ohio State women’s basketball coaching staff was looking to 2023 and beyond.
Ohio State became the eighth National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I program to make an offer to NEPA Elite Clark 17U girls team player Ciera Toomey.
Toomey, a 6-foot-3 sophomore from Dunmore, led the Hoop Group Showcase League championship NEPA Elite team in field goal percentage, points, rebounds and blocked shots.
The scholarship offer was the second from a Big Ten school for Toomey, who received her first offer less than a month ago from Penn State. She also has scholarship offers from Bucknell, Villanova, St. John’s, Rider and Boston College as well as an offer to join the program at the University of Pennsylvania.
As an Ivy League member, Penn does not offer athletic scholarships.
Toomey averaged 15.7 points as a freshman at Dunmore where she was a third-team, Class 3A all-state selection by Pennsylvania Sports Writers and a first-team, all-District 2 choice by NEPABasketball.com
Ohio State was 11-7 in the Big Ten and 21-12 overall in the 2019-20 season. It is scheduled to host Akron at 6 p.m.
