Basketball Academy

Former college coach Brian Coyle will be running the February Youth Basketball Academy. Coach Coyle has had stints at the University of Scranton, Marywood and Lackawanna College. Registration is now open.

Who: Two age groups for Boys and Girls. Lay-Ups will be for students entering Pre K to 2nd grade. Bounce Passers will be for students entering Grades 3 to 5.

Lay-up Class: 5:30-6:30pm
Bounce Passers Class: 6:30-7:30pm

Why: Learn the skills necessary to enjoy the game of Basketball. Skills learned will include passing, dribbling, shooting and defense. Your camper will also improve his or hers physical fitness and endurance.


Cost: $95 if pre-registered and paid for two clinics per week. Walk-ups: $105 (if space available). $135 if pre-registered and paid for three clinics per week. All students will receive a free t-shirt.
$8 or $125 for second clinic if signed up and paid for at the same time and no additional t-shirt is wanted.

Lay-ups: Grades Pre-K – 2nd

This class is for students who hope to play organized basketball and learn the skills necessary to enjoy the game. Players will learn about individual offensive moves as well as listening skills and the importance of teamwork. This is a great way to stay active and promote a healthy lifestyle by improving physical fitness. Participation is open to players of all abilities.

Bounce Passers: Grades 3 – 5

This class is for more advanced players who have some experience in organized basketball and wish to enhance their skills and abilities. Players will learn about team defense and how to make themselves and their teammates better offensively. Improving physical fitness and endurance
will be a focus of this camp..

Coach Matt Shaffer

Matt Shaffer has been involved in local basketball for the last 20 years as a player, coach, and official.  Matt played on one of Coach Bucci’s first AAU teams, helping the team to the National Championship Tournament in Orlando, Florida.  He graduated from Western Wayne High School before continuing his basketball career at Dickinson College.  While at Dickinson, Matt scored his 1000th point in his Junior year and shot 82% from the free throw stripe during his Dickinson career.  He played for the USA Men’s Team in the 2001 Arafura Games in Australia, winning the gold medal.

After college, Matt coached at Marywood University and Lackawanna College before refereeing at the collegiate level.  Coach Shaffer worked as the assistant Camp Director at Pocono Invitational Basketball Camps for 4 summers.  He also served as the Boys Program Director at Hoop City for 2 years and has coached numerous AAU and youth teams.

As a referee, Matt worked the 2012 Boys AA state Final before concentrating on NCAA refereeing.  Matt will be instructing our youth Basketball Academy.

2019-2020 Sessions

Two clinics per week – Tuesdays and Thursdays

Lay-Ups will be for students in Pre K to 2nd grade.

Bounce Passers will be for students in Grades 3 to 5.

Session 1
Lay-ups: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, 5:30-6:30pm starting September 17th until October 10th.
Bounce Passers: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays 6:30-7:30pm, starting September 17th until October 10th.

Session 2
Lay-ups: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays 5:30-6:30pm starting October 22nd until November 14th.
Bounce Passers: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays 6:30-7:30pm, starting October 22nd until November 14th

Session 3
Lay-ups ONLY: Tuesdays, Thursdays, 5:30-6:30pm, starting November 21st until December 19th. (No clinic on Thanksgiving)

Session 4
Lay-ups ONLY:  Tuesdays, Thursdays, 5:30-6:30pm starting February 4th until February 27th
